They called it sidihoni, the lake above the lake.
Nestled in the heart of Samosir Island, surrounded by the vast expanse of Lake Toba, lies a hidden gem—Sidihoni Lake. Its name, “Sidihoni,” comes from the Batak word “diahoni,” meaning “given” or “bestowed,” as if this lake is a precious gift from the spirits and the earth itself.
To the local people, Sidihoni is far more than just a beautiful lake. It is a sacred place, believed to be the home of a wise old grandmother spirit who watches over the waters and the land. Along the shores, there is a special site where villagers come to pray and make wishes—whether to heal an illness, find a soulmate, seek fortune, or ask for a better life.
The ritual is simple but deeply meaningful. People bring a small cup filled with water and a sacred object called “unte pangir.” They carefully cut the unte pangir and place it gently on the surface of the lake’s water. As they do this, they whisper a heartfelt prayer:
“Di hamu ompung namartua Sidihoni, namangingani danau didihoni on, lehon hamuma panggabean, parhorasan di hami na ro on asa anggiat horas horas jala gabe hami Tumpahon ni Ompungta mula jadi nabolon.”
This prayer is a humble plea, asking the guardian spirit to listen and grant their wishes.
But Sidihoni Lake holds more than just beauty and spirituality. It also carries mysteries and signs. One of the most remarkable phenomena is when the lake’s water suddenly turns bright red, like flowing blood. This rare event is believed to signal great changes or disasters that will soon happen in the region or even the world.
For example, when President Soeharto stepped down, the water in Sidihoni turned red—yet when collected in a bucket, the water remained clear. The same mysterious change appeared during the tragic attacks on the World Trade Center. Many believe the lake acts as a natural warning system.
Another fascinating legend is about the rice stalk. If someone throws the base of a rice stalk into Sidihoni, it will magically appear again in the village of Ambarita or even in Lake Toba. How this happens remains a mystery, but it adds to the lake’s mystical allure.
Throughout its history, Sidihoni Lake has faced challenges. It dried up twice—once during a local rebellion and again during the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2004. The land cracked and formed deep holes, causing the water to disappear temporarily. But thanks to the strong spirit and cooperation of the local community, these holes were sealed, and the lake was restored to its former beauty and crystal-clear waters.
However, visitors should always respect Sidihoni. The lake is known to be “angry” if treated disrespectfully. Speaking rudely near its waters or swimming with jewelry on may cause the jewelry to disappear or worse, lead to drowning accidents. The lake demands respect and politeness from those who come to enjoy it.
